Owls fall to ranked Ohio foe

On Saturday night, the Kenyon men’s soccer team traveled to Cleveland to challenge No. 3 Case Western Reserve University. A tough battle ensued, and the Spartans sent the Owls home with a 3-0 loss, putting their season record at 5-2.

Emmett Brown ’28 broke the ice for Kenyon only eight minutes into the game with the first of many shots on Case Western’s net. Competitive shots from Jack Commandeur ’29 and Hayato Ishii ’28 challenged the Spartan goalie, but both were saved.

The Owls maintained possession for much of the game, refusing to give the Spartans many opportunities; only one shot broke through Kenyon’s defense in the first half, but it landed just wide of the net.

By the end of the half, the Owls managed to accumulate three corner kicks and seven shots, two on goal.

Kenyon looked to carry its offensive momentum into the second half, hungry for a goal. But the Spartans had other plans, starting the period strong with a header to take the 1-0 lead. Unwilling to stop fighting, Andrew Adams ’28 fired a shot on goal just three minutes later, although it was saved by the Spartans’ goalkeeper. The Owls followed Adams’ shot up with three more, but none were successful.

Late in the second half, Case Western sealed the deal with two more goals, finishing 3-0. Although the Spartans seemed dominant on the scoreboard, the Owls had 17 shots compared to the Spartans’ five.

Kenyon will be back in action on Saturday as the Owls take on Adrian College (Mich.) away at 4 p.m., looking to make a comeback after this tough loss.
