Women’s lacrosse falls in blowout to Christopher Newport

The Kenyon women’s lacrosse team hosted nationally-ranked No. 19 Christopher Newport University on Saturday as the Owls looked to close out nonconference play on a four-game win streak. Playing in front of a home crowd, Kenyon came in with momentum and confidence, but it was not to be, as the Captains handed the Owls a convincing 20-5 defeat.

Christopher Newport wasted no time, jumping out to a 3-0 lead within the first two minutes. Kenyon answered quickly, though, with Lily Mason ’26 notching the Owls’ first goal at 12:45. From there, the Captains took firm control of the contest, dictating the pace and creating multiple scoring opportunities for themselves. When the first-quarter buzzer sounded, Kenyon found itself in a significant hole, trailing 10-1.

A quicker start to the second quarter offered some hope for the Owls. Mason struck again at 14:52, and Ashley Quinn ’26 followed just over a minute later, trimming the deficit to seven. Four unanswered Captains goals threatened to put the game away entirely, but Mason wasn’t done, as the senior completed her third hat trick of the season, giving Kenyon something to build on heading into halftime down 14-4.

After the break, both defenses clamped down as Kenyon searched for a way back into the game. The Owls made the matchup competitive for stretches, showing resilience despite the scoreline, but Christopher Newport steadily maintained its advantage, pushing the margin to 12 with 3:53 remaining in the third. Charlotte Skelly ’28 provided one of the afternoon’s brighter moments, scoring her 18th goal of the season with 1:49 left in the quarter. It was a well-taken finish, but Kenyon still faced a steep climb, trailing 16-5 heading into the fourth.

Any remaining hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished. Christopher Newport outscored Kenyon 4-0 in the final period, putting the finishing touches on a dominant 20-5 victory. On the stat sheet, the Captains held a commanding 36-17 shot advantage. Turnovers were evenly matched at 13 apiece, with Cecily Torres ’26 and Lia Stewart ’26 each forcing two, small positives in what was a tough day for the Owls.

Despite the scoreline, Stewart found reason for optimism when reflecting on the performance. “I am proud of our hard work and the ways we learn and grow from playing hard opponents,” she wrote in an email to the Collegian, also crediting the cohesion of Kenyon’s defensive group. “Defensively, we all work really well together and trust each other a lot, which helps us be successful.”

Attention now shifts to conference play, with Kenyon set to host Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday in its NCAC opener. The Owls have beaten the Bishops in 15 of their last 16 meetings. The match also doubles as Senior Day, a chance to honor a class that has been part of 37 wins across 61 games during its time with the program, a legacy worth celebrating. Stewart knows exactly what is at stake as the postseason picture begins to take shape. “The first conference game is really important because how we play matters most in conference, and we want to set a good tone going into the rest of the season,” she said.
