Volleyball goes 1-2, searching for second conference win

Last week the Kenyon volleyball team traveled to Springfield, Ohio, to take on Wittenberg University, ultimately losing 3-0. Then, over fall break, the Owls secured a 3-1 win against Carlow University (Pa.) on Oct. 9 before battling Ohio Wesleyan University for their Pride Game and losing 3-0.

The Owls saw early success against Wittenberg with a kill from Becca Gwynne ’26 and two kills from Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese ’28. Wittenberg worked hard to keep up with the Owls, however, earning several attack errors and kills of its own. The Tigers won the first set 25-16. The second set was much of the same, ending with an identical score, to put Wittenberg up 2-0. Determined to make a comeback, the Owls pushed hard, but lost the last set to the same score once again, never breaking 16 points.

After the tough loss, Kenyon looked to get back in the win column at home against Carlow. The Celtics got a quick start, winning the first set 25-23. Despite Carlow’s success in set one, Kenyon started the second set with four straight kills, two from Rumpca-Veronese, one from Gwynne and one from Maggie Wolf ’26. Arianna Flota ’27 went on a setting streak, garnering seven straight points due to attack errors from the Celtics and more kills from the Owls. Juliette Tomamichael ’26 closed out the set with a six-point run at the service line, leaving Kenyon with a victorious 25-6 score. The third set was much closer, but the Owls proved successful again, winning 25-20. Carlow refused to give up, firing early against Kenyon in the fourth set, determined to get back on top. However, the Owls fought back hard, ending the set 25-13 and earning the match win.

Once more, Kenyon took to its home court against conference opponent Ohio Wesleyan in its annual Pride Game. The first set remained fairly even, with the Battling Bishops just a step ahead of the Owls. Despite Kenyon putting up a fight, Ohio Wesleyan took the first set 25-17. The Battling Bishops pulled ahead for another early lead in the second set, as the Owls struggled to find their footing. Kills from Aura Barinas ’26, Olivia Gumz ’27 and Tomamichael kept Kenyon alive, but Ohio Wesleyan ultimately pulled through to win 25-16. In the final set, Kenyon tried to keep up with the Battling Bishops, keeping the score tight. Bryn Carrigan ’27 made her season debut with two kills in the final moments of the match, but it was not enough to stop the Battling Bishops from a 25-21 win, beating the Owls 3-0.

The results put Kenyon’s record to 4-15 (1-1 NCAC). The Owls will look to their game on Friday against Capital University to improve their record.
