Rumpca-Veronese's kills were crucial I COURTESY OF DAVID CARLEY
This week, the Kenyon volleyball team played just one match, beating the Capital University Comets at home on Senior Day. The team was then scheduled to play against Oberlin College; however, the game was postponed, leaving their record standing at 5-15 (1-2 NCAC).
On Friday, after honoring their six seniors, the Owls took to the court and earned an early lead. With kills from Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese ’28 and Juliette Tomamichel ’26, Kenyon ended the set with a resounding score of 25-14. The Owls entered the second set looking to continue their offensive momentum, however, Capital kept the score much closer this time. The Comets won the second set by the skin of their teeth, 26-24.
As the third set began, tensions were high with each team looking to break the tie. The score remained close for the entirety of the set, tying multiple times, as neither team led by more than two points. After multiple Capital attack errors, Tomamichel found one last kill to end the set 25-23. Kenyon needed to win just one more set to send Capital home, however, the Comets were not going down without a fight and absolutely dominated the fourth set, ending it with a score of 25-14.
The fifth and final set was close once again, seeing multiple ties and very small leads. Thanks to four more kills from Rumpca-Veronese and three from Aura Barinas ’26, the Owls pulled out a Senior Day win, finishing the set with a score of 15-11.
The team will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to DePauw University (Ind.) for more NCAC play.
