Over the weekend, the Kenyon women’s tennis team traveled to St. Louis to compete in the ITA Central Region Championship. In the singles matchups, the Owls soared as far as the semifinals, stopping just short of the championship match, while reaching the quarterfinals in doubles. The tournament lasted from Friday to Monday and featured several teams such as Kalamazoo College (Mich.), Otterbein University and Denison University. 

Three Owls started the singles competition off with a bye round: Clare Hudson ’28, Kiara Komlodi ’29 and Leni Lazaridou ’26. Hudson beat her first opponent in the round of 64 in a sweeping 6-0, 6-0 match, but unfortunately fell in the round of 32. Komlodi earned a 6-0, 6-1 second round victory and continued past the round of 32 with another win, 6-3, 6-1. Komlodi kept with her winning streak, garnering a 6-3, 6-4 win and a close 6-2, 7-6, 7-5 win to advance to the semifinals. Ultimately, she could not beat her foe, losing 7-5, 6-3 and ending her singles run. Lazaridou flew through the next three rounds, but came up short in the quarterfinals.

Three more Owls, Maya Stolarsky ’29, Hana Nouiame ’28 and Marguerite Shope ’28, began their battle to the top in the singles opening round. Stolarsky won her first matchup 6-2, 6-0, but lost in the round of 64. Nouiame did the same, crushing her first opponent 6-1, 6-1, but came up short in the round of 64. Finally, Shope fought through the first two rounds, but lost big in the round of 32, 0-6, 0-6.

Hudson and Komlodi paired up for the doubles matches, beating their first opponent 8-2. The duo continued their success into the round of 32, yet struggled in the round of 16, losing 8-6. Stolarsky and Shope flew through the first three rounds but fell in their match in the round of 16, 2-8. Nouiame and Lazaridou lost in the quarterfinals 8-5, despite winning their first three rounds as well. 

The contest marked Kenyon’s final battle in its fall season, and the Owls will be back in action in the spring.
