The Kenyon women’s basketball team played two games this past week, one at home against the DePauw University Tigers and one on the road against The College of Wooster Fighting Scots. The Owls suffered two conference losses against the Tigers with a score of 76-38 and the Scots with a score of 66-57, leaving their record at 2-14 (0-6 NCAC).

On Saturday, the Tigers opened the game with an impressive 13-0 run, leaving the Owls with a lot of ground to make up just six minutes into the game. Though Alyssa Horsley ’28 got the scoring going for Kenyon with a layup in the paint, Kenyon wasn’t able to match DePauw’s momentum and finished the quarter at a 16-point deficit. The Owls entered the second quarter looking to find their offensive footing, with Alexis Newman ’26 and Melana Pomerants ’27 scoring a 3-pointer and field goal in the paint respectively. Though Kenyon outscored DePauw 11-10 in the second quarter, the Owls trailed 33-18 as they headed to the locker room.

After the break, the Tigers didn’t let up, opening the half with a five-point run before Horsley once again threw a wrench in DePauw’s momentum. Again, the Owls had trouble finding their offensive groove and only scored 11 points in the third quarter, six of which were scored by Katherine Organ ’28. The Owls went into the fourth quarter down 29 points, looking to close the gap as much as they could. Despite its best efforts, Kenyon ended up going 3-9 on field goals and 1-2 on 3-pointers in the period, and fell by a final score of 76-38.

On Wednesday, the Owls opened the scoring this time, with Horsley being the first to put points on the board. The score remained close throughout the first quarter, but the Owls didn’t allow the Scots to overtake them a single time, and they ended the first quarter with a two-point lead. After the break, the Scots came out with a new intensity, tying the score immediately and followed up by taking the lead. Horsley, again being the first to score for Kenyon, tied the score at 15-15. The tie score remained for a full minute and a half before Wooster was able to find their footing and went on a five-point run. From that point on, the Owls were unable to pull ahead and went into halftime down 25-22.  When the teams returned to the court, the Scots opened the floodgates with an eight-point run to put them ahead by eleven points. Despite Kenyon’s offensive efforts, going 33.3% on field goals and 14.3% from three, and scoring 14 points in the quarter, it struggled on defense, seeing deficits as steep as 17 points. The Owls entered their last 10 minutes of play with 14 points to make up, still looking to notch their first conference win of the season. Kenyon slowly chipped away at the lead, decreasing it to just five points by the time Head Coach Mary Corbett called a 30-second timeout with just 2:17 left in the game. Unfortunately, after the huddle, the Owls were unable to catch up, and ultimately fell to the Scots with a score of 66-57.

The Owls will be back in action on Saturday as they hit the road to face the Oberlin College Yeowomen in another conference matchup.
