Sewanee staves off comeback from Lords football

Despite a furious comeback from the Lords (0-1, 0-0 NCAC), Sewanee: The University of the South (1-0, 0-0 SAA) escaped with a 31-21 victory yesterday in what was the season opener for both teams. Down 21-0 in the second quarter, the Lords scored three unanswered touchdowns to tie the game up at 21 entering the final 15 minutes of play. Not to be outdone, Sewanee responded with a touchdown of their own to retake the lead in the fourth quarter, sealing the victory with a 40-yard field goal with 1:12 left in regulation. Jake Bates ’16 (nine completions for 166 yards) connected with Brian Hunca ’17 (four catches for 131 yards) for two passing touchdowns, while Blake Calcei ’16 found the endzone in the third quarter with a 64-yard touchdown run.
