As the threat of the recent winter storm loomed over campus two weeks ago, I (Sacha) noticed a fairly common item on my Thomas Hall doorstep: someone’s DoorDash order, languishing in the cold, imminently about to be buried under at least a foot of snow. At first, I didn’t think much of it. (I like the occasional dinner out as much as the next guy!) But as the parcel made its way into the building and continued to sit unclaimed on the lobby table for several days, it became clear that nobody was coming to get it. Thus, in the spirit of Carrie Bradshaw, I couldn’t help but wonder: Do Kenyon students order too much takeout?

Perhaps as the Collegian’s token Southern Californian, I (Dorothy) am simply a hippie-dippie eco freak. But I am appalled by the amount of waste that food delivery generates. Styrofoam boxes, plastic bags, disposable utensils… The food you order might be fast, but the rate at which its container will biodegrade is verrrry slow. I know that Chipotle and Papa John’s are more appetizing than microwaving a can of soup, but that can is recyclable. C’mon, guys. I know you wanted to be a marine biologist or a National Geographic photographer when you were nine. Don’t let those childhood environmentalist dreams die.

And finally, I (Micah) will suggest a radical opinion: Peirce is actually pretty good! This is the year to take advantage of AVI’s desperate improvements to Kenyon’s dining options as it negotiates its contract. Each week seemingly features fun pop-ups and new and improved meals. DoorDashing dinner to your dorm means you miss out on one of Kenyon’s greatest joys: Peirce experimentation. Creating wacky wraps, mixing and matching food stations or even eating an atrocious amount of cottage cheese (cough cough Sacha and Dorothy) is simply part of the college experience. Ordering a basic Big Mac deprives you of this opportunity. 

We get it: You’re busy. It’s cold. Or maybe you just don’t want to brave New Side alone. But we believe in you. Suck it up, enter the Servery and let the sickly sweet aroma of the brand new waffle station wash over you.
