On Monday, the Student Life Committee announced the results of the Student Council elections for the next school year. In addition to a number of races where the winner was unopposed, there were three races where no one ran at all. Voter turnout was down yet again. And, once the winners were announced, voters and non-voters alike flocked to the anonymous app Yik Yak to bemoan the results.

It’s common in our community to complain about the ways Kenyon falls short. The list is seemingly endless: not enough fresh fruit in Peirce Dining Hall, moldy dorms, speedy scooters and more. If you’re one of those people, consider becoming a part of the Kenyon apparatus that makes change happen. 

The entirety of Student Council has the power to shape the Kenyon community. Are you mad about what clubs get funding? Join the Business and Finance Committee so you can have a say. Do you love the soft-serve machine but want more options in Peirce? The Housing and Dining Committee might be the place for you. Are you passionate about the environment? The Buildings, Grounds and Sustainability Committee just completed a massive bicentennial tree planting project. 

Student Council is one of the most accessible ways to effect change in your community. You have more than a decade before you can run for president of the United States, but running for Student Council is easy. If you’re unhappy with the state of the country, try fixing Kenyon first!
