On Sunday, Student Council met to discuss upcoming campus events and hear a proposal outlining potential changes to campus signage.

Sophomore Class President Amelia Russell ’28 announced that the sophomore class committee will be hosting another “Lollipop Lift-Up” event on Thursday. The committee’s last event of the year will be a “Megamind” movie night on Friday from 7 to 9:15 p.m. in the Community Foundation Theater, where there will be free snacks and a raffle for a Jellycat.

First Year Class President Macy Shelton ’29 reported that the First Year Class Committee (FYCC) will host an end-of-semester social. The event will take place on Friday from 4  to 6 p.m. on the First-Year Quad.

In light of finals week, Dean of Students Brian Janssen reported that the original Late Night Bites event will return to Peirce Hall on Sunday. The event will feature a hot dog bar, as well as a wide variety of fruit, candy and other tasty food options. On Monday, FYCC and Director of First-Year Experience Don Miller are hosting a study night in Gund Commons with Panera bagels and other treats.

The Council then had a conversation with Director of Design and Publication Adam Gilson and Vice President for Communications Janet Marsden from the Office of Communications regarding upcoming changes to campus signage. Marsden outlined that there is currently no wayfinding system available on campus. Gilson then explained that he is working with a graphic design firm called Roll Barresi & Associates to develop new signage to help drivers find their way around campus. The new signage will be dark green to blend in with campus scenery. As of now, the plan includes a highway sign indicating where the exit for Kenyon is, as well as more signs for identifying buildings and locations on the edges of campus, like the Brown Family Environmental Center. They also discussed increasing parking lot signage to include clearer time restrictions for when parking is allowed. They are also interested in adding more maps around campus and are considering replacing the existing bronze map near the College Gates. Newly tenured Assistant Professor of Art History Katherine Calvin has already been in touch with Gilson about creating an art display to repurpose the old signs. 

Student Council will not be meeting again this semester.
