Results: Should all-stu be moderated? Students weigh in

Data from last week’s poll

All-student email (all-stu) serves as a resource for students searching for a last-minute ride to Columbus, sending out audition notices for their film project and everything in between. The nature of all-stu elicits many emotions from the students who receive them. In a Saturday email and through a QR code in the Sept. 18 issue, the Collegian posed a question to students through an anonymous survey: “Should all-stu be moderated?” Over the course of five days, 118 students across all class years responded with their opinions. The first-year class was the only group where a majority of respondents answered in favor of all-stu being moderated.

Overall, a majority of students agreed that all-stu should not be moderated. In the survey, the Collegian gave students the option to elaborate on their opinion. Below are a selection of anonymous student responses from both sides.

Those in favor of moderating all-stu:

“I despise getting incessant troll or irrelevant emails every day, all-stu is almost offensively annoying at worst and useless at best. No, thank you, I would not like to join Introductory Russian nor am I interested in reading three follow-up emails on the exact same subject. Please moderate this mess or just enforce stricter access because it’s too easy to push spam to everyone.”

“So many emails, not all needed, and some probably never should have been sent in the first place.”

“Yes, but barely. All-stu is Kenyon’s public square in which everyone must act professionally.”

Those opposed to moderating all-stu:

“As troublesome as an unmoderated all-stu can be on occasion, the fact remains that it is opt-in; if you don’t want to be on the unmoderated email chain, you don’t need to be.”

“I think most people accept that all-stu is a space where anything can happen. If you post something offensive, you must accept the consequences of possible responses, professors seeing, and Kenyon administration seeing and stepping in.”

“Honestly, unfiltered all-stu adds to the culture. All-stu’s most unhinged moments create Kenyon stories.”

“Who would moderate them? I get why people want it moderated but I’m more concerned about censorship than spam.”
